Last week Brother Cox came and spoke with our leadership class. I extremely enjoyed everything he had to say! It felt like he was speaking to me, and telling me everything I needed to hear at this time in my life. It is so nice to have a time in your day to refocus on what is important and to be strengthened for the days to come.
One principle that Dean Cox mentioned that really stood out to me was "to learn in order to serve". He incorporated a quote by President Boyd K. Packer which has really stuck with me. I recently obtained a new church calling, and with that and the pressures of school rising and the newness of "adult life" I was beginning to feel extremely overwhelmed. I began questioning myself, "Am I qualified? Can I really understand all of this material? How can I be a teacher for others when I am struggling to understand these concepts myself?" However, the principle that he taught to try and learn in order to teach and serve others, and not to receive the glory for ourselves but for God and the teaching of His children, is something I want to achieve in my life. I have already tried to, through prayer and gratitude, and through trying to be willing to help others. It has changed my attitude about school, making the material and subject matter easier to grasp, and has helped me in Gospel Doctrine studies, making me want to be that servant and teacher for the Lord and His children.
My definition of a servant leader based on Brother Cox's lesson is someone who is humble, who willingly serves others despite their circumstances, and someone who genuinely cares for people, wants to get to know and bless their lives, and who gives all the glory to our Father in Heaven.
A servant leader in my life would be my Grandmother Kiene. She is one of the most humble, sweetest people I have ever met. Every time I am around her she genuinely wants to know everything about my life, and supports me in all that I do. She takes care of my sweet Grandfather who has Dementia, who can be a lot for anyone to take care of. She never says anything cruel or complains, but has immersed herself in serving others, and still never takes any of the credit. I love her so much!
