The Wise Man Build His House Upon The Rock

This week for my Book of Mormon post, I would like to focus on just one scripture. This scripture has been a key stone in my life, and I have found time and time again that it is useful. This is the amazing Scripture Mastery: Helaman 5:12.
Recently, I have made the decision to serve a mission. This decision has never made me happier in my life, and I have not even gone on one yet! However, many times with important decisions that we know are right, Satan likes to get in our head. He tries to convince us in any way He can from doing good in the world. He will use doubt, fear, temptation-- just about any tactic he can. HE DOES NOT WANT YOU TO SUCCEED. This has taken me a little while to discover, but once we come to recognize that it is Satan who is giving us these negative thoughts, it is a lot easier to turn to the Lord and to receive strength. In Helaman 5:12 it states, "And now my sons, remember, remember that it is upon the rock of our Redeemer, who is Christ, the Son of God, that ye must build your foundation; that when the devil shall send forth his mighty winds, yea, his shafts in the whirlwind, yea, when all his hail and his mighty story shall beat upon you, it shall have no power over you to drag you down to the gulf of misery and endless wo, because of the rock upon which ye are built, which is a sure foundation, a foundation whereon if men build they cannot fall." Notice how it does not say "if" the devil shall send these things, but rather "when". We are all going to be faced with temptation in our lives. In fact, sometimes it may feel like we are literally wrestling with the Devil. I have never truly felt this "wrestling" until I made the decision to serve a mission and started my mission papers. Things just kept coming up in my life: mostly doubt, fear, and feelings of inadequacy. It was not until I was able to recognize that these feelings were coming from Satan because He KNOWS how important this work is, and importantly, he KNOWS me and knows what I am capable of accomplishing as a tool in the hands of our Lord. However, I remembered when I received my conformation to serve a mission, it was not until I told Heavenly Father that I was putting all my fears aside and moving in the direction He wanted me to with complete faith, that I received my answer. You see, fear is the opposite of faith. Satan has the power to bruise our heal, and I guarantee that He will try and often succeed. But I know that if we have the Lord on our side, that we have the power to crush his skull. My dear friends, whoever may be reading, I hope this helps. Build upon a sure foundation, which is keeping the Savior, Jesus Christ and Heavenly Father in your lives. I know that if we do so, we will not fall and Satan "shall have no power over us". This I say humbly, giving praise to my Father up above, in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Keep on keepin' on!! LOVE YOU ALL!

  1. Hey! I don't know you...we might've met idk but I'm Hillary Owen's cousin. Anyway, through Hill I found your blog and happened to see this post. Helaman 5:12 is actually one of my FAVorite scriptures and I loved your thoughts on it! :) Those words are so powerful and just hit me every time. I especially love "it shall have NO power over you to drag you down . . .because of the rock upon which ye are built, which is a SURE foundation, a foundation whereon if men build they CANNOT fall". Man isn't that such a beautiful, hopeful message?!! I know that if we build our lives on the sure foundation of Christ we can't fail. I'm so glad I saw this post, it sure helped me! Thanks for sharing your testimony. And good luck on your mission, whenever you go! You'll make a wonderful missionary (out there with Hill too). <3
